Frequently asked questions
What is lorem ipsum?
It's placeholder text — scrambled Latin derived from a work by Cicero — used to fill a design so you can judge the layout and typography without real copy distracting you. It looks like natural language but has no meaning.
Can I generate paragraphs, sentences, or words?
Yes. Pick the unit and enter a count. Paragraphs suit body text, sentences suit captions and intros, and words suit headings, buttons, or anywhere an exact length matters.
Can it include HTML tags?
Yes. Turn on the HTML option and each paragraph is wrapped in <p></p> tags, ready to paste into your markup. Leave it off for plain text.
Is my data uploaded to a server?
No. Everything runs in your browser from a built-in word list — nothing is uploaded, stored, or sent anywhere.
Which browsers are supported?
We recommend the latest Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or Edge. Tools require a modern browser with JavaScript enabled.
Lorem ipsum generator — free and private
Placeholder text lets you design and build before the real words are ready. This generator produces classic lorem ipsum in the amount you need — by paragraphs, sentences, or words — with an option to start from the famous "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet…" opening and an option to wrap each paragraph in HTML tags for pasting straight into markup. It all runs in your browser, so nothing is uploaded and it works offline.
Choose a unit and a count, and the text updates instantly. Copy it with a tap, or press regenerate for a fresh variation. A live word and character count sits above the result so you can see how much you've got.
What is placeholder text?
Placeholder text — often called dummy text or filler text — is meaningless content used to stand in for real copy while a layout is being designed. It lets designers, developers, and writers see how a page, mock-up, or template looks with text flowing through it, without waiting for the finished words. The point is that it looks like natural language but says nothing, so nobody is tempted to read it instead of judging the design.
That last part matters. If you fill a mock-up with real, readable copy, reviewers start reacting to the words. Nonsense Latin keeps attention on the typography, spacing, and hierarchy — which is exactly what a draft layout is meant to test.
Where lorem ipsum comes from
Lorem ipsum isn't random gibberish — it's scrambled Latin. The text is derived from a work by the Roman writer Cicero, "de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum" (On the Ends of Good and Evil), written in 45 BC. Words were cut, added, and rearranged into something that reads like Latin but has no coherent meaning. The familiar "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet" is actually a fragment of a longer sentence with the first word, "dolorem," chopped off.
It has been the printing and typesetting industry's standard dummy text since the 1500s, when an unknown printer scrambled a galley of type to make a specimen book. It survived for centuries and jumped to digital design in the 1980s when Letraset and later desktop-publishing software popularised it. Because it uses a natural distribution of letters and word lengths — unlike, say, repeating "text text text" — it gives a realistic impression of how real copy will sit on the page.
Paragraphs, sentences, or words
Different jobs need different amounts. Choose paragraphs to fill an article body or a multi-column layout; each paragraph varies in length for a natural look. Choose sentences when you need a caption, a short intro, or a card description. Choose words for tight spaces like a heading, a button, a menu item, or a meta description where an exact word count matters. The count field goes up to a sensible limit for each unit, so you can generate anything from a single label to a long page of body text.
HTML output for developers
If you're building a web page, switch on the HTML option and each paragraph is wrapped in <p></p> tags, ready to paste directly into your markup or a template. That saves you from manually adding tags around each block, and it mirrors how the text will actually be structured in the final page. Leave the option off for plain text you can drop into a design tool, a document, or a form field. Either way, once you have real text you can check its length with the Word Counter.
Works on your phone
The generator is built mobile-first. The count field opens the numeric keypad, the unit switch and toggles are large and easy to tap, and the result sits in a scrollable box so a long block never takes over the screen. Copying is a single tap, and because everything runs locally, the text appears instantly with no connection needed.
Privacy: nothing leaves your device
The text is generated entirely in your browser from a built-in word list. Nothing is uploaded, nothing is stored on a server, and there is no account to create. The generator works the same whether you're online or off, because it never needs to talk to a server in the first place.
