How it works

On the first run, the tool loads a one-time video encoder (about 31 MB) into your browser — after that it's cached, so later jobs start straight away. A progress bar keeps you posted while it works. When it's done, you get an inline player to check the result and a clear before-and-after of the file size, then you can share or download the compressed MP4. Reading the video, re-encoding it, and packaging the result all happen on your own device.

Because the work is local, speed depends on the clip and your hardware. A short video compresses in moments; a long or high-resolution one takes more time and memory. On a phone, very long recordings are heavier going than on a computer, so for a very large file a desktop is the smoother choice.

What the quality levels do

To make a video smaller, the tool re-encodes it with the efficient H.264 codec and scales it down so it's at most 1280 pixels wide — big enough to look good on a phone or in a chat, while cutting the file size sharply. The quality level you choose controls how hard it squeezes:

High quality

The gentlest setting — the clearest picture and the largest of the three output files. Good when the footage matters and you just need it a bit smaller.

Balanced

Smallest file

The strongest compression — the smallest file, with some visible quality loss. Reach for it when getting under a size limit matters more than perfect detail.

Whatever you pick, the output is a standard MP4 that plays on any phone, computer, or app with no special software. Most videos come out dramatically smaller; the tool shows you the exact before-and-after so you can decide whether to keep the result or try a different level.
