How to use it

How much should you tip?

Tipping customs vary a lot by country, so there's no single right number. In the United States, restaurant tipping is expected and usually runs from 15% for standard service to 20% or more for good service, with 20% now the common default in many cities. In much of Europe a service charge is often already included, and a smaller tip — rounding up the bill or adding 5–10% — is normal rather than expected. In some countries tipping is rare or reserved for exceptional service.

The presets here reflect the typical Western restaurant range, but the custom field is there precisely because "normal" depends on where you are and what you're paying for. Splitting the bill fairly

When a group shares a meal, the fair and simple approach is to add the tip to the whole bill and then divide the total evenly. That's what the split option does: enter how many people are paying, and it shows the total per person and the tip per person, so everyone contributes the same share of both. The math is kept at full precision and only the amounts you see are rounded to two decimals, so on an uneven split (say three ways) a per-person figure may be a cent off — the kind of rounding every bill split runs into.

Is the tip before or after tax?

This is the most common question, and the honest answer is: it depends on the number you type in. The calculator applies your chosen percentage to whatever bill amount you enter. Traditionally, a tip is calculated on the pre-tax subtotal — the cost of the food and drink before sales tax — since the tax isn't part of the service. Many people simply tip on the final total for convenience, which is a little more generous. Either way is fine; just decide which figure you're entering.
